Former U-23 national soccer team coach Hwang Seon-hong, who was known as the 'fallen stork' after failing to advance to

the Olympic finals, has taken the helm of Daejeon Hana Citizen, a professional soccer team in the K League 1 that has

fallen into the relegation zone.

Daejeon announced on the 3rd that it had appointed Manager Hwang as the 15th manager.

Accordingly, Coach Hwang returned to Daejeon four years after stepping down from the helm in September 2020 due to

poor performance.

The club explained the reason for the appointment, saying, "We are in a critical situation where we are in 11th place, and

we need a new change and a turnaround. We decided that Coach Hwang, who has a wealth of experience as a player and

coach in domestic and international leagues and the national team, is the right person to overcome the crisis based on his

leadership and experience leading the 합법 team."

Coach Hwang, who was a leading striker representing Korea during his playing days, took his first steps as a coach at

Busan IPark in 2008.

He led Pohang since 2011 and achieved the feat of winning both the regular league and the FA Cup in 2013.

He emerged as a famous coach representing the K-League by leading Pohang to 99 league wins and 3 trophies (1 regular

league win and 2 FA Cup wins) in 5 years.

In 2016, he once again led FC Seoul to the K League 1 championship as manager, and won the K League 1 Manager of the

Year award for the second year in a row.

However, since 2017, Director Hwang's career has been filled with more memories of failure than success.

As his performance in Seoul continued to decline, his conflicts with players became public, and he eventually too

k responsibility for the poor performance and voluntarily resigned in April 2018.

In 2020, he took over as the first manager after Daejeon's transformation into a corporate team with Hana Financial

Group, but stepped down before completing a successful season.

Daejeon, which was in the K League 2 (2nd division) at the time, made bold investments to gain promotion and recruited

several 'first division level' players, but when the team fell into a slump in the middle of the season and fell to 3rd place, he

voluntarily resigned. It was only 8 months after taking the reins.

Coach Hwang was appointed as the head coach of the U-23 national soccer team in 2021, and led Korea to its third

consecutive championship at the 2022 Hangzhou Asian Games held last year by winning all the games.

However, the U-23 national team led by Hwang Sun-hong suffered a shocking defeat to Indonesia, led by coach Shin Tae-

yong, at the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) U-23 Asian Cup on April 26, failing to advance to the semifinals and also

failing to secure a ticket to the 2024 Paris Olympics.

It has been 40 years since the 1984 Los Angeles Games that the Korean soccer team failed to advance to the Olympics.

Just five weeks after experiencing a major failure that shocked fans, Coach Hwang was given a chance to bounce back.

Fans are looking askance at Coach Hwang, who has gone from being a 'legend' of Korean soccer to an 'icon of failure',

leading Daejeon again.

There are also voices of criticism that only 'star coaches' are given the chance to win the second round. Among them, there

is sarcasm that it is because Coach Hwang was the main character of the 2002 Korea-Japan World Cup semifinals.

Coach Hwang will join the team right away and begin his official career as Daejeon's coach.

Coach Hwang said of his appointment, "I feel like I've returned to my hometown since I first took the first step with

Daejeon when it was re-established with Hana Financial Group." He added, "I'm very happy and I'm very grateful to the

club for entrusting me with this important responsibility during such a difficult time."

He continued, "Since the team is currently in crisis, I feel a heavy burden and sense of responsibility. I will do my best with

a sincere heart to use my experience on the field to quickly normalize the team."
